Bridgeport students turn shopping bags into fashion statements
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. --Sione Hardison, 16, a fashion major at Bullard-Havens Technical High School, can probably design clothing in her sleep. But using paper bags for the material that was a challenge that called on teamwork and a lot of creativity. The result -- a little outfit Hardison and teammates called "hood and lace" -- was one of 10 creations students fashioned last week out of Lord & Taylor shopping bags. Part of a competition sponsored by the upscale department store, the outfits will be shipped to the Stamford Lord & Taylor to go on display with other entries from about a half-dozen high schools in the region that have fashion programs. Some of the outfits students from Bullard-Havens designed consist of nothing but shopping bags that have been scored, pleated, braided, woven and cut to look like something any model would be proud to wear.

Right Brain, Derren Raser
Derren Raser, a Southern California musician, found his musical voice when he heard the stylings of singer and songwriter James Taylor. "All my favorite musicians are singer/songwriters," he said. Looking through this lens, he was able to develop his own style. Raser will be in Denver this weekend, participating in the Colorado Music Summit, where musicians gather to hear seminars, and also perform at various venues in the city. During his time in Colorado he will also make a stop to play in Summit County, which he calls "like a second home." Raser grew in Kansas City, visiting Summit County during the summers with his parents. Raser favors a description of his music he once heard: Simon Garfunkel meets the Shins. "It's an older sort of style, which is really influenced by the older singer/songwriters.
Moss Helps Launch Tsunami Charity
Supermodel Kate Moss has helped launch a new charity set up in remembrance of her friend who died in 2004's Indian Ocean tsunami. The British beauty was devastated when she learned model booker Samantha Archer Fayet, who she befriended early in her career, had died in Thailand along with her 6-month-old daughter Ruby Rose. The SamandRuby charity, which has been set up by Samantha's husband Patrice Fayet, will be funded by sales of a new rose created in their memory. Moss says, "Sam was one of my oldest and closest friends. If my support for the charity helps kids get a better education and start in life, it's the least I can do in memory of Sam and Ruby Rose." .

Critic earns 'F' for foolish
The Rose Bowl is not interested in being a quarter or semifinal site. That's not happening. "And if there were a playoff, LSU would have been at [top-ranked] Ohio State. The game probably would have been played in Cleveland." Adams even suggested that if the Rose Bowl resisted becoming part of a playoff, the Chick-fil-A Bowl could take its place. I would rather see a chicken take Adams' place as Georgia's president. We actually would be grateful when it lays an egg. tgreenstein@tribune.com more in /sports/college Copyright © 2008, The Chicago Tribune .
