Several years ago when there was mounting anxiety about the Iraq war, President Bush encouraged loyal Americans to counter this anxiety by a surge of consumer buying. Was his motivation to promote a beneficial stimulation to the economy, or was it more to distract attention from Iraq? Does entering into a frenzy of buying relieve anxiety? Hardly. In fact, it probably contributes to distress, especially when the credit card bills come due.In April 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King wrote: "We must rapidly begin the shift from a thing-oriented society to a person-oriented society. When machines and computers, profit motives and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, militarism and economic exploitation are incapable of being conquered. A nation can flounder as readily in the face of moral and spiritual bankruptcy as it can through financial bankruptcy."In response to this extreme consumerism, there is a growing rebellion among people who reject the whole concept of spend, spend, spend.
